The case of Preston Davey, a 13-month-old adopted baby who died in July 2023, continues to raise questions beyond the criminal convictions that have already been secured.

Preston had been placed with his adoptive parents only months before his death. During the trial, jurors heard evidence about previous hospital visits and injuries, while prosecutors argued that the circumstances surrounding his final days were not the result of an accident. Jamie Varley was later convicted of mrder, while John McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of allowing the dath of a child and other offences.

The case of Preston Davey, a 13-month-old adopted baby who died in July 2023, has continued to raise serious questions about the events surrounding his final months and whether earlier warning signs could have been recognized.

Preston had been placed with prospective adoptive parents at nine months old. During the subsequent investigation and trial, prosecutors presented extensive medical and digital evidence concerning injuries Preston suffered while in their care. Jamie Varley was convicted of mrder and multiple other offences, while John McGowan-Fazakerley was convicted of allowing a child’s dath and other offences.

The criminal proceedings have now concluded. Varley received a whole-life order, while McGowan-Fazakerley was sentenced to 25 years in prison.

But the wider investigation has not ended. An independent safeguarding review has resumed and is examining how Preston was protected, how information was handled by different agencies and whether opportunities to identify concerns were missed before his d*ath.

The review could therefore provide important answers beyond the criminal case, particularly about how professionals responded to Preston’s earlier hospital visits and injuries.
