💙 2-Year-Old Maryam With a 28-Inch Head Gets a Remarkable Second Chance After Complex Surgery 🙏✨

At just 2 years old, Maryam was living with an extraordinary medical condition that had made even the simplest movements incredibly difficult. Her head measured about 28 inches (72 cm) in circumference due to severe hydrocephalus and megalencephaly.

Hydrocephalus occurs when excess cerebrospinal fluid builds up inside the skull. In Maryam’s case, the condition had become so severe that the weight and size of her head made it difficult for her to lift or turn it without ᴀssistance.

Her parents, desperate to find help, traveled roughly 730 miles (1,175 km) from Tajikistan to India after hearing about another child who had survived an extreme case of hydrocephalus.

Doctors at Fortis Memorial Research Insтιтute in Gurgaon initially hesitated to operate because the procedure carried extremely high risks. Maryam’s skull bones had already fused, making it impossible to simply drain away all of the excess fluid.

Eventually, specialists agreed to take on the challenging case.

Maryam underwent a series of lengthy procedures designed to gradually reduce the size and weight of her head. Doctors drained approximately 500 milliliters of fluid during each procedure, with eight operations ultimately being performed.

The journey was incredibly difficult. At one point, doctors feared they might lose her.

But Maryam fought through.

Following the surgeries, her head circumference was reduced to around 26 inches (65 cm). More importantly, her doctors reported encouraging signs of brain development. A later CT scan showed positive progress, and Maryam had begun lifting her head on her own.

Dr. Sandeep Vaishya, who was involved in her care, described the case as exceptionally challenging. Because the head can become extremely heavy in severe cases, young children may struggle to develop the muscle strength needed to support it.

Doctors had been concerned that Maryam’s chances of significant improvement were very low, but the surgery ultimately gave her a possibility of greater independence and a more normal life.

There are still risks, including the possibility of neurological damage, and her long-term future remains uncertain.

But for Maryam and her family, every small movement represents something much bigger: hope. 💙🌸
