💔🌊 She Saved Her 7-Year-Old Son From the River — Then Never Came Back

A mother’s instinct can be impossible to explain.

Sometimes, it simply takes over.

That is what happened Sunday evening when Angelina “Angie” Khalimendik was at the Des Plaines River in Libertyville, Illinois, with her three children.

Her 7-year-old son, Johnny, got into trouble in the water and could not make it back to shore.

Angie went after him.

Her loved ones say she did not hesitate. She entered the river and managed to get Johnny safely back to shore.

But Angie never made it out.

Family members and bystanders rushed to help, and first responders attempted to save her. Despite their efforts, Angie could not be saved.

Johnny survived.

For his family, there is no doubt that he is alive today because his mother put his life before her own.

“Johnny is alive today because his mother chose him, without hesitation, in the last moments of her life,” her loved ones wrote.

Those words are now part of the story Angie leaves behind.

She was a mother of three. Michael is 11, Anna is 9 and Johnny is 7.

All three children now face a future without the woman who raised them, loved them and, in her final moments, gave everything she had to protect one of them.

Friends describe Angie as kind, hardworking, generous and deeply selfless.

But perhaps the most powerful description came from those who knew her best:

“Angie died the way Angie lived, putting the people Angie loved first.”

For Johnny, the loss may become even more difficult to understand as he grows older.

One day, he may fully realize what happened that evening — that when he was in danger, his mother came for him.

She got him home.

And she did not come home herself.

That is an enormous burden for a child to carry, but it is also a profound testament to the love his mother had for him.

The family is now asking for prayers and support as they begin navigating a loss no family should ever have to endure.

They are asking people to pray for Johnny as he grows and learns to understand his mother’s sacrifice.

They are asking for prayers for Anna and Michael as they grieve the loss of their mom.

And they are asking for prayers for Angie’s husband, relatives, friends and everyone who loved her.

There may never be enough words to ease the pain of losing a mother this way.

But there is one thing that can never be taken away from Angie’s children: the knowledge that their mother loved them fiercely.

Angelina Khalimendik showed exactly what those words can mean.
