Asia Bennett was only 22 years old.

Her mother remembers her as sweet, quiet and someone who would never intentionally hurt another person. But on the night of August 11, 2026, a domestic dispute in Jacksonville, Florida, ended with Asia being critically injured during an encounter with police.

Now, her family is demanding answers.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said deputies were dispatched to a home on Westdale Drive near Pine Bluff Drive at approximately 10:45 p.m. following a reported domestic incident involving injuries.

According to the department, a man approached an arriving officer and said he had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend, identified as Asia Bennett. He reportedly told the officer that Bennett was inside the residence and was holding a knife.

Moments later, according to JSO, Bennett came outside carrying several items.

The officer reportedly ordered her to put everything down. Police said Bennett placed some items on the ground but continued holding a large kitchen knife.

The officer then allegedly gave repeated verbal commands for her to release it.

What happened next is now at the center of a growing dispute between the official account and the questions being raised by Bennett’s family.

JSO said Bennett moved toward the officer, prompting the officer to fire a sH๏τ.

According to police, Bennett fell but did not release the knife. Investigators said she then attempted to get back up and again moved toward the officer, leading to a second sH๏τ.

A backup officer arrived and continued giving verbal commands, police said. Bennett eventually released the knife.

Firefighters and paramedics provided emergency treatment at the scene before she was transported to a hospital.

She could not be saved.

Asia Bennett was 22.

Her family is now seeking greater transparency surrounding the circumstances of the encounter. They have retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump and are calling for the release of body-camera footage, 911 calls and dispatch records.

The family says those materials are necessary for the public to understand what happened beyond the initial police account.

For Asia’s mother, the tragedy is especially difficult because of how she remembers her daughter.

She described Asia as a quiet and kind young woman whose life was cut short during an incident that began with a call for help.

The case has left relatives facing grief while also searching for clarity about the final moments of Asia’s life.

As calls for the release of additional evidence continue, the central questions remain focused on what happened at the home that night and whether the available recordings can provide a fuller picture.
