Relatives, Neighbors And Even Prior Caseworkers Had No Idea Sixteen Children Were Hidden Inside The Hamden House For Years

Hamden is a quiet rural village in Vinton County, about 80 miles south of Columbus. Residents on Ohmer Street described a neighborhood where people keep to themselves. Neighbor Josh Odell said he could see the backyard and never spotted a child. Another resident who had lived on the street for six years called it a quiet place and said the situation was simply sad. Local shopkeepers remembered the younger couple coming in for pizza or food from a nearby truck, sometimes smelling strongly of cat urine, with Elizabeth appearing withdrawn and, in one account, as if she was not allowed to talk.

Relatives later told reporters they had no idea so many children were living inside the house. The family had moved around for years and left a thin paper trail. Public records showed little about daily life. That isolation is part of why the case exploded into a national story: sixteen children, never enrolled in regular school, confined largely to one filthy room, and almost no one outside the home seemed to know they existed in those numbers. There had been a warning years earlier. In 2020, while the family lived in Gallia County, Ohio Virtual Academy teachers reported that an 11-year-old Siders child could not write the full alphabet, could not produce letter sounds, and could count only to 12. A 13-year-old had stopped completing work. Caseworkers noted roaches, gnats, flies, bruising, and bug bites.

A doctor raised concerns about missed medical follow-ups and possible developmental delays, including from lead exposure. Gallia County Children’s Services opened a case, placed the family under protective supervision in January 2021, and closed the file in June 2021 after officials said the parents made progress on a court-approved plan. Later truancy efforts reportedly lost track of the family. By the time Vinton County deputies walked through the door in 2026, the children had spent years in conditions far worse than those earlier reports described. Officials have not fully explained how a family this large could live so invisibly in a small town, or why earlier intervention did not prevent what Wilson called a third-world scene. The children are now in the custody of South Central Ohio Job and Family Services.

The state authorized an emergency million-dollar payment to help pay for their care, medical treatment, and the long process of addressing years of isolation, delayed development, and trauma. Wilson said it will take a great deal of work to undo the emotional harm. The question that remains in Hamden is simpler and harder: how did sixteen children disappear in plain sight
