What was meant to be a family evening on the water became a devastating tragedy on the Jersey Shore.
Authorities allege that Stephen Schneider, 64, was operating a boat while impaired by alcohol when it struck a wooden channel marker in Barnegat Bay at around 9 p.m. on July 19.
The impact sent his grandchildren, Mya Bella Golabek, 9, and Sigmund Paul Golabek, 7, into the water. Schneider and his wife reportedly pulled the children back aboard and tried to help them, but both children later d*ied at a hospital.
The siblings were their motherβs only children, making the loss especially devastating for their family.
Schneider now faces homicide-related charges as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash and the allegation that alcohol impairment played a role. The accusations remain allegations unless established in court.
