Because tissue had been removed from her leg, Elaine had to learn how to walk again as she recovered.

Then came another unexpected detail.

As the transplanted tissue settled into its new location, Elaine discovered that hair had begun growing on the reconstructed section of her tongue.

“I grew some hair on my tongue as it was from my leg, but the radiotherapy zapped that,” she explained.

The unusual experience was only one small part of an incredibly demanding recovery.

Elaine underwent six weeks of daily radiotherapy, a treatment period she described as extremely difficult.

She recalled being fitted with a specialized mask and mouthpiece to help keep her tongue positioned correctly during treatment, describing the experience as something that felt almost unreal.

For Elaine, the diagnosis was particularly difficult to understand because she had never smoked or consumed alcohol.

She has openly expressed her confusion about why the illness developed despite having none of those commonly discussed risk factors.

According to NHS data cited in reports about Elaine’s case, the number of mouth cancer cases in England has reached thousands each year, underlining the growing importance of awareness.

Elaine’s journey has involved an extraordinary operation, rehabilitation, radiotherapy and a completely different relationship with her own body.
