When Erin and Abbey Delaney came into the world, they were already facing an extraordinary challenge.
The twin sisters were born joined at the top of their skulls, a rare condition known as craniopagus twinning. Their brains were fused together, making separation an incredibly dangerous and complicated possibility. ππΆπΆ
Their parents, Heather and Riley, first learned they were expecting twins during an ultrasound.
But the news quickly became overwhelming when doctors revealed that their daughters were joined at the head.
Heather knew the road ahead would be frightening, but she refused to make a decision about her daughtersβ lives based only on fear. β€οΈβπ©Ή
The girls were born 10 weeks premature at Childrenβs Hospital of Philadelphia.
Doctors warned their parents that separating them could result in one or both babies losing their lives. Yet their medical team continued searching for a way to give both girls a chance. π₯π
Before the separation, surgeons carefully prepared the twins by using balloons to gradually expand the skin around their skulls, creating additional tissue that could later help close the surgical areas. π§ β¨
After months of planning, an extraordinary team of about 30 surgeons, nurses and medical staff gathered for the operation.
Then, when the girls were 11 months old, the surgery began.
β° Eleven hours later, Erin and Abbey were finally separated.
But the greatest challenge was that the twins shared a crucial blood vessel called the superior sagittal sinus, which helps drain blood from the brain.
Doctors had warned that in similar cases, one twin may not survive.
In this case, Erin received the shared blood vessel β yet incredibly, both sisters survived. π₯Ήπ
Following the operation, both girls were placed into medically induced comas for about a week to give their brains time to recover. π
Erin began recovering more quickly, while Abbey faced a much more difficult road.
She experienced a brain hemorrhage, several respiratory infections, sepsis and other complications that kept her in the hospital longer. ππ₯
But little by little, both sisters continued to improve.
Eventually, they were finally able to go home to their parents. π‘π
Today, Erin and Abbey continue working hard through developmental therapy several times a week.
They are learning important skills such as crawling, speaking and eventually eating independently. π£π£οΈπ
Erin has already reached some beautiful milestones, including learning to crawl and saying βDadaβ for the first time. π₯Ήπ
Both girls still receive nutrition through feeding tubes, while therapists help them learn how to eat on their own.
Their journey is far from over.
But every new milestone is a reminder of how far these sisters have already come. π
