An 11-year-old girl stepped off her school bus and walked toward home. No one outside her family would see her again.
For 22 days, authorities were not told that she was missing.
Nearly four years later, the question remains painfully simple: Where is Madalina?
On the afternoon of November 21, 2022, Madalina Cojocari got off her school bus near her home in Cornelius, North Carolina.
Surveillance footage captured the moment at approximately 5 p.m.
It would become the last confirmed sighting of the 11-year-old girl.
Madalina should have continued with her normal routine. She should have returned home, gone to school the following day, and carried on with childhood.
Instead, she disappeared.
What made the case particularly troubling was the amount of time that pá´€ssed before authorities learned she was missing.
Madalina did not return to school, prompting teachers and staff to repeatedly contact her family and seek an explanation for her absence.
But authorities were not notified until December 15, 2022, during a required school meeting.
That was 22 days after the school bus footage captured Madalina getting off the bus.
Her mother, Diana Cojocari, eventually told authorities that she had not seen her daughter for weeks.
Investigators began examining the family’s timeline and circumstances surrounding the disappearance.
Diana reportedly told investigators that she last saw Madalina on the night of November 23, two days after the school bus footage.
She said the disappearance occurred after an argument involving her husband, Christopher Palmiter, Madalina’s stepfather.
Palmiter reportedly left for Michigan the following day. He later claimed he did not know that Madalina was missing.
The failure of the adults to immediately report the child’s absence became a major part of the investigation.
Both Cojocari and Palmiter were arrested and charged with failing to report a missing child to authorities, a criminal offense in North Carolina.
Those charges were separate from proving who caused Madalina’s disappearance. Prosecutors argued, however, that the delay prevented authorities from responding sooner and potentially placed the child at greater risk.
Cojocari later pleaded guilty and was released from jail in May 2024 after completing her sentence. Following her release, she finalized her divorce from Palmiter and reportedly left the United States.
Authorities have continued to consider her a person of interest in the investigation.
Palmiter was also convicted. In May 2026, an appeals court upheld his conviction after rejecting his challenge.
Yet neither conviction has answered the question that has haunted investigators and Madalina’s loved ones for years.
Where is Madalina?
The FBI and Cornelius Police Department continue seeking information that could help locate her.
At the time of her disappearance, Madalina was 11 years old. She had brown hair and brown eyes, stood approximately 4 feet 10 inches tall, and weighed around 90 pounds.
Authorities have also released age-progressed images showing how she might look as she grows older.
Every pᴀssing year changes a child’s appearance, but it does not change the importance of finding them.
