Hundreds honor North Texas soldier Isabella Gonzales at memorial

A North Texas community came together Saturday to honor fallen 19-year-old U.S. Army Pvt. Isabella Gonzales with an Honor Ride, memorial service and celebration of life.

An Honor Ride for Gonzales began Saturday morning at Maverick Harley-Davidson in Carrollton, traveling along Interstate 35E, up Josey Lane to Hebron High School before returning on Old Denton Road to the dealership.

Hundreds of people took part in the ride to honor Gonzales, who grew up in Carrollton and graduated from Hebron High School in 2025 before joining the U.S. Army.

At Hebron High School, participants observed a moment of silence in Gonzales’ memory.

The Carrollton American Legion also held a fundraiser during the event, with proceeds going directly to Gonzales’ family.

“We’re all heartbroken and just want to do what we can to help out. This is a sad time. She gave her life and we’re just doing what we can. Nothing can bring her back, but we’re hoping to help her family as much as possible,” participant Celeste Webster said.

Saturday evening, hundreds of people, including many who did not know Gonzales personally, gathered at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano for her celebration of life. PH๏τos from throughout her life were displayed on a large screen as family, military leaders and community members remembered the fallen soldier.

An honor guard presented the colors as the service began, followed by a performance of “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes.

Brig. Gen. Glenn Henke of the U.S. Army’s 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command remembered Gonzales as a soldier whose personality made an impact on those around her.

“Her atтιтude, her dedication and her humor made her a leader who could help point the unit in the right direction. Soldiers like that are special,” Henke said.

Gonzales’ mother and sister sat surrounded by loved ones during the service. Speaking on behalf of the family, her uncle, Alfredo Muniz, said Gonzales had dreamed of military service from an early age.

“It wasn’t a surprise to anyone when she made her way into the United States Army recruiting office at the age of 17,” Muniz said. “This was her chance to do everything she dreamed of — travel internationally, serve people and even learn how to use the ‘pew, pew, pew,’ and yes, those were her exact words.”

Muniz told mourners Gonzales answered the call to serve when others would not.

“The message you need to leave with tonight is simple: Private First Class Isabella Gonzales stood where others hesitated. She answered the call,” he said.

Prestonwood Baptist Church Senior Pastor Jack Graham also reflected on Gonzales’ decision to serve her country.

“It is the call that is remarkable to me, the call of a young woman and the response to say, ‘Here am I, send me,’” Graham said.

Outside the church, the Carrollton Fire Department raised a large American flag in Gonzales’ honor. Graham also shared a message from President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump with those attending the service.

Carrollton soldier killed in Iran war

The community in Carrollton is coming together to make memorial ribbons for 19-year-old Pvt. Isabella Gonzales. She was killed earlier this month in an Iranian strike.

The backstory:

Gonzales died on July 17 in an Iranian strike on a U.S. military base in Jordan. She and another soldier were supporting a U.S. mission against the Islamic State when they were killed defending against the incoming Iranian strikes.

What they’re saying:

Hebron High School is part of the Lewisville Independent School District. The district shared a statement shortly after Gonzales’ death.

“Not long ago, Isabella walked the halls of Hebron as a student, a classmate and a friend. Her decision to serve after graduation speaks volumes of her character,” the district said. “On behalf of the students, staff and families of Lewisville ISD, we extend our deepest sympathy to Isabella’s family, her friends and all who loved her. We are holding them close during this incredibly difficult time.”

Local perspective:

At a recent Carrollton City Council meeting, leaders wore black and purple ribbons, Gonzales’ favorite colors, to honor her life.

Carrollton is planning to create a permanent memorial for Gonzales in the city and will hold a vigil at a community church following her funeral.
